Is a $500 electric car possible?

An electric car for $500US? Is it possible? Does it work? What kind of performance does it get? How far can you go on a charge? How much does it cost to recharge?
I was reading my twitter posts and checking out some of my new Twitter friends and just sort of following links from their home pages. One thing led to another and I came across a website that claims you can retrofit a car into an electric vehicle for $500US.. They have a you tube video on the page, which I watched and at the end was listed some related videos - one of which was Tom Hanks.
Tom has enough money to buy any vehicle he could want and still afford the gas and insurance. Why would he be driving a retrofitted XB?
The answer is simple - economics. One of the things you do to create wealth, or keep it, is to NOT spend your money unwisely. OK, you can help the environment too.
My girlfriend and I drive a Prius and are getting just shy of 50 mpg and for all the driving we do it still costs us about $40 per month. If we were to do this kind of conversion on a vehicle for city driving, at a cost of $1.00 per day we would experience a fuel savings of 25%. The fuel savings for a car getting worse gas mileage is even greater.
If you want to give it a shot you can get plans and support (comes with the plans) at Convert2EV.
I am challenging the auto geeks to get busy and help get us off of carbon based fuels.
