The Future of Computers - Take 2
November 24, 2008 by Curt Siters
I'm a big fan of Apple. However, as I was adding some articles to Technorati I saw an ad for HP's new computer, the "TouchSmart." So, being the geek that I am I had to go check it out. As a note, I love HP's RPN calculators and lab equipment.
A few months back I wrote about some amazing technology I came across a few months before the introduction of the iPhone (see A New Future For Computers.)
I am surprised that Apple didn't come out with this first, but on retrospect it isn't always wise to be the first. When you are first it shows innovation and desire. However, being first means that everyone else will watch you closely and find your mistakes. They will eliminate those mistakes (if they are smart) and take your strengths and extend them.

Without actually having gotten my hands on it I can see one very glaring problem with the TouchSmart - it is not ergonomic. In order to make use of the touch technology your arms will of necessity be moved out of a natural position and for extended periods of time this could potentially cause damage to your joints - namely your shoulders and back - much as mice have done to wrists (carpal tunnel syndrome.)
But, being that the TouchSmart is the first computer to make use of this technology this brave new world of computers will work to make it easier and safer to use.
